Backlit vs. LED vs. Solar House Numbers: Which Is Best for Canadian Homes?

If your house number disappears after dark, you have three main lighting options: backlit (halo-lit) numbers, front-lit LED signs, and solar-powered numbers. They are not equal — especially through a Nova Scotia or New Brunswick winter. Here is an honest comparison based on what we build and what our customers report back.

Quick Comparison

Backlit (halo-lit) Front-lit LED Solar
Night visibility Excellent, all angles Excellent Fair to poor in winter
Winter reliability Excellent Excellent Weak (short days, snow on panel)
Wiring needed Yes (low-voltage) Yes (low-voltage) No
Running cost Pennies per year Pennies per year None
Lifespan 10+ years (LED) 10+ years 2–4 years (battery degrades)
Typical price From ~$65/digit From ~$65/digit $30–$80 retail units

Backlit (Halo-Lit) House Numbers

Backlit numbers glow from behind, throwing a soft halo onto the mounting surface. The digits read as crisp silhouettes at night and as clean metal numbers by day.

Strengths: readable from every angle, even in fog and rain; elegant on any home style; sealed LED modules last a decade or more; extremely low power draw. Weaknesses: needs a low-voltage wiring run (simple for any electrician, and many homeowners handle it themselves).

This is what we recommend for most homes in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, and it is what our illuminated civic number signs use.

Front-Lit LED Address Signs

Front-lit signs illuminate the face of the numbers directly — the style you see on our house number and street name signs. Visibility is excellent, and they are the right choice when you want the street name lit alongside the number, especially on rural roads.

Strengths: maximum legibility at distance; ideal for post-mounted driveway signs. Weaknesses: same wiring requirement as backlit.

Solar House Numbers

Solar numbers are tempting — no wiring, cheap to buy. But in Atlantic Canada they have a serious winter problem: December days are short, panels get covered by snow and frost, and cold kills battery capacity. The result is a sign that shines in July and goes dark in January — exactly the months you need it most. Batteries also degrade, so most units dim noticeably within two to three seasons.

Where solar makes sense: temporary needs, seasonal properties used mainly in summer, or locations where running any wire is truly impossible. Where it does not: as the primary year-round civic number for a Nova Scotia or New Brunswick home. If wiring is impossible, a large high-contrast reflective or metal civic number is more dependable than solar in winter.

What About Non-Illuminated Numbers?

A well-made metal sign with strong contrast and proper size is fully compliant and highly visible where street lighting is decent. Start with our size guide to pick digit height, and consider reflective faces if drivers' headlights will hit the sign directly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are illuminated house numbers expensive to run?

No. LED modules draw a few watts — typically under a dollar or two per year in electricity.

Do backlit numbers meet Nova Scotia and New Brunswick visibility rules?

Yes — they exceed them. Bylaws require the number to be visible from the street; an illuminated number is visible in conditions where ordinary numbers fail. See our NS law guide and NB law guide.

Can I convert my existing sign to lit?

Usually the cleanest path is replacing it with a purpose-built backlit sign — retrofits tend to look and perform worse. Call us and we will advise honestly: +1 (833) 860-9292.

How long does installation take?

Most homeowners mount the sign in under an hour; the low-voltage connection is a quick job for an electrician if you prefer not to do it yourself.
